Food waste has numerous consequences. Some are very obvious because you and household directly witness them as they occur. Theses consequences include:

  • Loss of money.

  • Increase in grocery costs.

  • Higher waste disposal costs from municipalities or service providers. 

  • Uncomfortable smells caused by food decay & poor hygienic conditions. 

  • Increase in unwanted pests (in cases where disposal services are non-existent, inefficient, or operate infrequently). With increase in these pests, comes the increase likelihood of Illnesses from vector pest like cockroaches. 

  • Cost associated to pest control & prevention.

There are other types of consequences that you may not encounter on a daily basis. Some of these are: 

  • Loss resources employed in food production, processing, and transportation.

  • Missed opportunity to alleviate hunger among the needy 

  • Destruction of the ozone layer and acceleration of global warming via food waste generated methane gas.

According to some studies, if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. This means that food waste plays a significant role in the depletion of the ozone layer, which contributes to global warming. We can easily identify some of the consequences of global warming because we experience them on an occasional or frequent basis, such as:

  • Increase in natural disasters such as floods, droughts, and storms.

  • Extreme weather conditions, such as harsh winters and hot summers.

There are numerous negative consequences to food waste.  At +Green, we place a strong emphasis on issues that are directly or indirectly related to environmental degradation and threats to other life forms (species, ecosystems and other well-known places). 

There is a direct relationship between food waste, endangered species and ecosystems. The excessive production and consumption of food leads to significant amounts of waste, which in turn contributes to environmental degradation. This degradation affects the habitats of many endangered animals, reducing their access to resources and increasing the risk of extinction. Additionally, food waste produces greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change, further impacting the habitats and survival of endangered species. Therefore, addressing food waste is crucial in efforts to protect and conserve endangered animals.

The majority of ecologists and biologists will tell you that every species is vital to its own environment. The predator's function in controlling the numbers of other species is one of these roles. Every species extinction affects the ecosystem in which it occurs, sometimes with consequences for humans as well. 

Climate change is one of the main drivers of species extinction, as changing temperatures, extreme weather events, and habitat loss all have significant impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity. As the planet continues to warm, many species are struggling to adapt or migrate to more suitable habitats, leading to a decline in populations and an increase in extinction rates. It is crucial that we take action to mitigate climate change and protect vulnerable species before it's too late.

Increase in unhealthy Foods

In a predator-prey relationship, ecosystems and species learn to regulate one another. We run a higher danger of human pest species proliferating if a species that serves as a predator to another species that poses a threat to people goes extinct. After then, we look for alternative solutions, such as growing GMO crops or using a lot of pesticides. This always raises the likelihood that we will eat unhealthy meals, with all the associated ailments. 

Loss of Symbols

Nowadays, animals are frequently utilized to symbolize businesses, nations, sports teams, etc. Some of these symbols may disappear due to the extinction of certain species, or adversely affected them. 

Increase in Illnesses

Many variables can contribute to the population growth of some disease-causing species, such as mosquitoes, but it is sometimes overlooked how other species' population management affects these disease-causing species. For instance, the loss of certain toad, frog, bird, or fish species that eat mosquito larvae will undoubtedly contribute to the rise in mosquitoes populations and the subsequent spread of malaria. 

Human to wild conflicts

As was already said, habitat loss brought on by climate change is exacerbated by food waste. An additional detrimental effect of breaking a habit is a higher chance of confrontation between people and wildlife. These species have to move to new locations in quest of resources like food and water when their natural habitats are lost. They periodically move close to populated areas, which might lead to resource conflicts. Clashes between humans and elephants are among the most well-known and well-recorded of these occurrences.
